I'm sure you've seen all the recent posts on social media about what everyone is doing during the Coronavirus lockdown?
I don't know about you, but my social feeds have been a mixture of sickeningly brilliant over-achievers who are learning a new skill (you know who you are!) or recommendations for the best things to binge-watch on Netflix (more my style).
Given work is slightly quieter than usual, I have taken the opportunity as a passionate digital marketer to revisit some of my favourite content and social media marketing books.
I find re-reading things I've read before is often a great way to see things with a slightly different perspective or to spark new ideas.
My favourite book about content marketing is: 'They Ask You Answer' by Marcus Sheridan.
I discovered it a few years ago during an Amazon shopping spree.
Since then, I've recommended this book numerous times to colleagues and clients who are looking to win more customers through content marketing.
It's not your typical marketing textbook tome, much more conversational and extremely readable.
If you haven't read this book, then before you spend any more time on creating content or writing blog posts, I strongly recommend that you do.
Marcus Sheridan shares his own case studies of how he saved his swimming pool company from economic collapse in 2008 after he accidentally stumbled across what was a transformational business approach.
This exciting new approach was content marketing.
Content Marketing revolutionised his business, generating a lot of business through writing and publishing effective content that would genuinely help his customers.
When clients ask me why they should bother with content marketing, I always recommend they read this book.
When they do, they tend to really see why it's worth investing in a strong content marketing strategy.
There's something incredibly powerful about a real business owner telling his own personal story of how he changed his fortunes through content creation and publishing.
It's no surprise to know that he's since gone on to become an industry keynote speaker, marketing consultant, educational trainer and co-owner of a thriving US-based marketing agency.
If you haven't come across this book yet, I highly recommend you give it a look.
At a glance, here are just some of the many benefits of having a clear content marketing strategy:
Helps improve your search engine optimization activity to generate more traffic for your website
Lead generation, and conversion, is easier as customers find your content, are more informed after they've read it and therefore more qualified when they speak to you
It's way more affordable than other forms of advertising
It's 'active' not 'passive' - your customers are seeking you out because you are providing their answers free of charge!
It's a great way to position your business as THE authority on a particular subject
